The Fitness Cliff and why I’m begging you to not jump…

February 11, 2016 By Kara 2 Comments

cliff2

This week, I saw an article on USA Today that said that deemed this past Tuesday, February 9th, as “Fitness Cliff day”.

It’s the “day of doomed resolutions” according to many gyms, fitness facilities, and wellness professionals.

It’s the day that the majority of people have thrown in the towel, said that it is simply too hard to create change, and have walked away from healthy living goals.

A little further research led me to a statistic that said that by this point in the year, 70% of you have given up on your healthy living resolutions for the year. SEVENTY PERCENT.

That means out of our Facebook followers, over 4,200 have given up. Out of the 160 At-Home TRIBE members, 112 have given up. Of our Instagram followers, 2026 have given up.

And I just can’t come to grips with that statistic.

See, I choose to believe that we walked into this journey knowing it was much more about our hearts than our bodies…more about our habits than our moment by moment happenings…more about our purpose than our pleasure.

The article said that “people become frustrated when they can’t do exactly as they set out to do on January 1st”, so they simply quit.
THEY QUIT.

Maybe you’re one of those 70%. Maybe you started out the year with an unattainable goal of dramatic lifestyle change with huge weight loss results. Maybe you tried a new eating plan where you cut out dairy and gluten and sugar and expected miraculous change in a couple weeks. Maybe you determined you would only eat organic foods and spend an hour a day working out.

I don’t know what your specific plans were, but I do know this: LIFE HAPPENS.

Right?

In an ideal world, we could plan ahead, we could find plenty of time to exercise, have enough money to buy perfectly healthy foods all the time, we could have the hours in our day to prepare fresh, local foods, and we would all have success.

But that’s not the world that we live in.

And friends, we have a lot more at stake than worrying over our specific physiques and pant size. WE ARE ON A MISSION and THAT should change everything.

See, I choose to believe that we are a people united for a greater cause than just fitting into smaller clothes or looking good in a bikini. I believe that if you’re sitting and reading this post right now, you KNOW the importance of taking good care of your body and you want to do so for one reason: HIS GLORY.

You have realized that perfection is unattainable, but you’re ready to follow Him into deeper waters and into learning how to fuel your body well both physically AND spiritually so that you can pursue the calling you’ve been given.

Here’s what I know:

I believe that it’s NEVER too late to start over and that we can get right back on track even if we threw in the towel on January 2nd.

I believe that there is freedom to be found that has absolutely NOTHING to do with a number on the scale, but in the posture of our hearts.

I believe that we can decide to press on even when it’s difficult, due to our faith in knowing that the way we steward our health matters and that we are accountable for doing so.

I believe that although there will be setbacks, that you CAN and you WILL change your life because you’re not walking through this thing alone.

I believe that you’ve come too far and know too much to turn back into being misled, persuaded, and overwhelmed by any of the fitness gimmicks out there that promise you a short term result but are often followed by long-term defeat.

I believe that He who calls is ABLE and that if He called you to this, He will see you through it.

BUT- I also know that the enemy of your soul wants nothing more than to make you feel defeated.
To whisper to you that you aren’t enough and you’ll never be strong enough to beat these habits.
To convince you to buy into the lie that this same cycle of defeat is the one that you are meant to walk and that you’ll keep hustling for your worth then hiding in shame for the rest of your days.

Sometimes, we have to call him out and bring to light the lies that we have believed. And friend, if you’ve believed any lie that says something that contrasts what you KNOW the Lord has told you, then it’s time to CAST IT DOWN.

It’s time to link arms with one another and march forward.
It’s time to SET YOUR GAZE on Him and remember the call.
REMEMBER the promise.
REMEMBER WHO it is that you are seeking to please.
REMEMBER the truths that He has whispered to you on the mountain top so that you can sing them back when you’re walking through the valley.
REMEMBER TODAY who you are.
REMEMBER TODAY WHOSE YOU ARE.

AND WALK ON.

His strength. His purposes. His calling.

This may look different than you imagined. It may mean that your scale hasn’t moved one single pound and yet He is asking you to continue on. It may mean that you have to set down some of the food plans, nutrition guides, or hard-core workouts that you’ve clung to as an idol for years. It may mean that He calls you to go in a completely different direction than you ever anticipated.

He is asking you, “Will you obey me regardless?”
“Will you trust ME with the results?”
“Will you love me enough to follow where I’m leading even if it doesn’t look like you thought it would?”

Friends, I’ve grown weary of watching so many walk away defeated. Those who base their worth and their value on a stinking number on the scale. And I’ve also grown tired of watching others swing to the complete opposite end of the spectrum who say “He loves me anyway, it doesn’t really matter if I take care of myself or not.”

See, neither of those two extremes is following where we’ve been called.

Stewardship falls right in the middle between Obsession and Neglect.

Throwing in the towel and falling off the “fitness cliff”, is not where He is calling you.
Becoming obsessed with your weight and food and counting every single pound as an indicator of worth, also not where He is calling you.

Today, be reminded.
THERE IS FREEDOM TO BE FOUND in the journey.

I need you to not quit.

I need you to trust that just around the corner could be the Promised Land that He has been preparing for you. You may be just around the bend from it, and if you turn back now, you will continue wandering in the desert for years and years.

Aren’t your tired?
Aren’t you sick of the cycle: diet, quit and binge, diet, quit and binge, etc.

He is calling you to a better way- HIS way.

Let’s be those who refuse to fit into the statistics and who keep going even when we don’t want to. Let’s be those who choose to move forward into our PURPOSE instead of pursuing temporary pleasures.

If you need support, we are here to cheer you on! Be sure to follow along on the social media sites, or for those who want more daily encouragement and accountability, consider the At-Home TRIBE.

We’re ready to beat the statistics. We’re ready to walk forward as FREE WOMEN who refuse to give up and to turn back when the Lord is leading.

We are pressing on.

Will you join us?
“Our health–as a Believer in Christ–is so much more than what society says it to be. For us–it is about stewardship. It is about obedience and full submission, turning this gift of life and the tool He uses to do His work, back to Him…If it’s been a while since you’ve asked God what He may want you to do in regards to your health, then I encourage you to do that. Just like the areas of parenting, marriage, finances, schooling etc–it will look different for each of us, but it’s our duty to ask, listen, and then obey…” Quote from: ”Discipline: The Glad Surrender” by Elisabeth Elliot.

A quick way to change the world…

February 8, 2016 By Kara Leave a Comment

I posted this on the Wellness Witness Social Media Accounts earlier today, but wanted to share it here with you, also.

stand together

Monday Morning Motivation:

Let’s be women who refuse to let things divide us. Let’s be women who know who the real enemy is and refuse to focus our attention and frustration against anything/anyone else.
Let’s be women who lift others up, who cheer each other on, and who look for ways to stand together.

Whether it’s over a favorite football team, your beliefs on formula feeding or breast milk, homeschool or private or public school, republican or democrat, stay-at-home mom or working mom or single mom or not a mom, let’s stop looking at what we disagree about and start looking for ways to join together.

It’s so important.
And so counter-cultural.

And I just happen to think it could change our world.

Super Bowl MANIA!!!

February 5, 2016 By Kara 1 Comment

Here in North Carolina people are losing their minds over the Panthers going to the SuperBowl. Even at my kid’s school this week they have had a Panther’s Spirit Day every single day of the week! I’m not normally a huge NFL fan (we are more college football people), but it has been exciting to watch everyone rally and get behind this amazing team.

Today in our group workouts we had Super Bowl mania day and each of the circuits were based on either the Panthers team or on a player. It was fun! Here are a few pictures for you to enjoy:

IMG_5233 IMG_5240 IMG_5250 IMG_5257 IMG_5195 IMG_5208 IMG_5224

For those that want to plan their own Football/Panthers/SuperBowl themed workout, here’s what we did:
Warm-Up: Partner toss and Run, Quick Feet shuffles
Stations: 6 stations. Groups stayed at each session to do THREE times through. 45 seconds work, 15 seconds recover. On the third time, they were given 30 seconds to transition to the next station and to catch their breath.
-Receiver Runs (sprints and 3 point stance across the gym)
-Luke Kuechly Kicks (on hands and knees, bent leg and press foot up towards ceiling.)
-DAB like a Heisman (Heisman runs but with a DAB added to end of each move)
-Stewart Side Runs- Using the ladder complete various runs up and back
-KEEP POUNDING ball slams- slam balls in groups. Slam then run to back of line.
-Panther Prowl- like a bear crawl but in panther style

At Half-time we had 3 minutes of a Partner Push drill followed by quick feet and then quick feet shuffles.

It was so fun!

Lastly, some tips for you as you enter into Super Bowl weekend and people LOSE THEIR MINDS over eating all the foods…

superbowltips

Some strategies that may help you:
-Drink your water. Start now.
-Eat healthy meals for Breakfast and Lunch on the big day. “Saving your Calories” for the game is not a good idea.
-Focus on Protein whenever you can.
-If you have to choose between fat or starch, choose fat.
-Remind yourself that this is NOT the last opportunity that you’ll ever have to enjoy these types of foods so you don’t have to go all out, full blown crazy. A few bites may satisfy your craving without making you feel stuffed.
-Remember 1 Cor 10:23 that EVERYTHING is permissible, but not everything is BENEFICIAL.
Regardless of what you choose to eat or not eat, there is grace. God won’t love you any more or any less than He does right now.

Have fun!
And Go Panthers!

Checking in…

January 26, 2016 By Kara 1 Comment

Hey, friends!

Sorry for the long absence. I didn’t plant to be absent for so long, but life has been busy and full, and time has flown by.

The last couple weeks I’ve been working on getting my book ready to go to printing (eek!!!). It’s called Finally Free and is a 28 day devotional that will tackle our hearts first and then our health. I am excited to see what the Lord will do through it and praying that those who read it will find some new freedom.
Here’s a picture of the cover, which was designed by my friend Hannah.

Beautiful, right?
She did such a good job!

Last week I was devastated with the news that my suite mate from college, Melody, has passed away due to cancer. She was an amazing person and truly loved the Lord. I was able to travel to her town for the funeral which was really a celebration of life and testimony to the goodness of God.

When I returned home, the Lord led me to film The Most Important Question I’ve Ever Asked You which was shown to 10,000 people and watched by almost 4000. And the best part? It led to me getting to share with a reader about salvation and she ended up giving her life to the Lord. Isn’t that amazing?

Sometimes we just have to be BOLD. When you feel the Spirit leading you to speak, then SPEAK UP. Even if you’re afraid. Even if your voice shakes. SPEAK UP. He will bless it.

The At-Home TRIBE has continued to grow and these amazing women have been blessing my socks off. They are bold and willing to show up and press forward even when times are hard. They’re holding each other accountable and cheering each other on. It’s beautiful. We’re getting ready to launch into February with all new content, workouts, and teaching so if you’ve been waiting for a good time to join, this is it. For all the details about this $12 a month faith based wellness program, visit www.wellnesswitness.com/at-home-tribe-membership .

I’ve been working on some new recipes and this past week have almost perfected a Creamy Cauliflower CrockPot soup as well as a Fat Loss Friendly Taco Soup. I hope to do a creamy spinach spaghetti squash dish tomorrow and will be sharing these with all of you soon.

We received our first big snow of the year last Friday and I’ve been trying to soak up every minute with my family that I could. I was excited when I knew the kids would be going back to school today, but as soon as I dropped them off I was missing them terribly.
Here are a couple pics from our snow day fun:
snow day 1 snow day 2 snow day 3I hope that you’ve been staying warm and that your January has been off to a great start. If you’re starting to lose your motivation, here’s a quote I just posted on the FACEBOOK page this morning.

“Our health- as a Believer in Christ- is so much more than what society says it to be. For us- it is about stewardship. It is about obedience and full submission, turning this gift of life and the tool (our bodies!) He uses to do His work, back to Him…If it’s been a while since you’ve asked God what He may want you to do in regards to your health, then I encourage you to do that. Just like the areas of parenting, marriage, finances, schooling, etc- it will look different for each of us, but it’s our duty to ask, listen, and then obey…”

Press on today, friends. You can do this! His strength. His provision. His glory.

Protein Pancakes Version 2.0

January 12, 2016 By Kara 2 Comments

Hey, friends!
IMG_4245
It’s Tuesday! I try to share new, healthy (or healthier) recipes with you on Tuesdays, but confess, I’ve gotten quite a bit behind recently! For today, I’m actually sharing with you a recipe from some of my dear friends, Courtney and Katrina of RevWell Anderson.

Y’all know that I love a good protein pancake. I’ve shared my version before, which is delicious, but it has quite a bit more ingredients and is more time consuming than this version I’m sharing with you today.

Katrina first shared this recipe on her YouTube video and I knew I wanted to try it right away. I make a double batch of these things and every time wish that I had tripled it instead.

Here’s her super simple, super delicious recipe:
(This will make a double batch. Feel free to half if you want less)

Ingredients:
6 eggs
2 c. oats (I used old fashioned. Quick oats would work fine, too)
2 c. cottage cheese
1 TB sugar (I used about half dropper of liquid stevia instead. Worked great!)
2 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp vanilla

Instructions:
1- Place ingredients into a mixer/blender.

IMG_4239

2- Mix.
IMG_4241
3- Cook.

IMG_4244
Seriously.  That’s it.

You can see that we top some of ours with blueberries (frozen that we let sit on the counter to thaw for a bit), mini chocolate chips, and some are plain. I spread mine with some natural peanut butter and love every single bite.

Aren’t these easy?!?!
No grinding the oats ahead of time, no mixing dry ingredients then wet ingredients. Just dump it in and blend. If your mixture seems thick, add a little milk of your choice.

IMG_4245The texture of these won’t be exactly like the regular pancakes you’re used to, but they are seriously tasty and a much healthier option for you.

I hope you enjoy!
Be sure to check out Katrina’s Video on YOUTUBE and stop by their Facebook page for more faith based fitness encouragement. They’re two amazing women who are bringing some serious truth and goodness each and every day.
