I’m not losing weight! What should I do?!?!

March 14, 2016 By Kara 1 Comment

scale

One of the questions I’m often asked by women is this:
“I’m not losing weight! What do I do?”

I get it.

You’re working hard- eating healthy foods, moving your body each day, and still the scale won’t budge.

First, realize this:
1- It’s NOT ABOUT THE WEIGHT.

The weight may be a symptom, but it is not the real issue. The Lord can use ANY thing to draw our attention to Him and to do work in our hearts. Sometimes, He can use physical struggles such as our weight and health. This journey is about obedience- about learning to steward our bodies well for HIS glory REGARDLESS.

What if He said to you right now: “Daughter, I want you to obey me. You’re not going to lose one single pound along the way, but I’m asking you to steward your health well for my glory. I’m asking you to eat healthy foods so that you can have the energy you need to serve Me. I’m asking you to move your body each day so that you are strong enough to go on the tasks that I send your way. I’m asking you to take time to rest, to stretch, to spend time in my Word, and to pray. I want you to obey me. Daughter, would you still be willing to do it EVEN IF YOU NEVER LOST A SINGLE POUND?”
The answer to this question will give you insight into where your heart is at right now.

It’s easy to lose our way and to make it about the numbers, right? To think that we can strive and work hard as long as we see the number on the scale go down.

When really, He is looking to SET US FREE from that number.

He wants us to be willing to say, “God, I’ll trust You. Regardless of what a scale may tell me, I will look to YOU alone for validation. I will look to YOU alone for my worth. I will choose to OBEY you and to leave the results and the consequences up to you.”

2- REALIZE THAT THIS IS A LIFESTYLE CHANGE- A JOURNEY WITH THE LORD AND NOT A QUICK FIX
Any of you could go out right now and purchase a program that is guaranteed to bring fast results. You’ll be able to eat exactly what they tell you to, and move exactly as they recommend. And you’ll see results. At least in the beginning. Until you realize that you are sick of being completely restricted and having to eat foods that you don’t like. You’ll grow weary with the super intense, time intense workouts required, and you’ll begin to go back to eating normally. And for over 80% of you, you’ll gain back all of the weight that you initially lost. And then, within a year, over 70% of those will gain back EVEN MORE weight than they started with. You’ll throw in the towel until you finally grow frustrated again, and start the same crazy plan over again. This cycle will repeat yourself on and on and on.

NO.

We say NO to this way of living. We say YES to allowing the Lord to show us a sustainable, enjoyable LIFESTYLE change. This is NOT a quick-fix diet plan, so you may not drop tons of weight immediately and impress all of your friends with your ‘bikini ready bod’. But you WILL see results if you stick with making good choices AND you’ll find freedom from being enslaved to any plan or any scale.

3– Don’t look LEFT or RIGHT in comparison unless it’s to bless the woman beside you.

I don’t care if your best friend and you are both dieting and she has lost twice the amount of weight that you have. It doesn’t matter to me if she’s dropped two dress sizes and says she feels AMAZING! What I care about is this: WHERE IS YOUR HEART and is it free?

You haven’t been called here so that you can be enslaved to a plan- you’re called here because the Lord wants to set you FREE and to show you how to move and live and function as HIS LOVED CHILD. A healthy, whole, set-free woman who knows WHO she is, WHOSE SHE IS, and that she is MADE FOR MORE.

If someone around you is experiencing success, CHEER HER ON. BLESS HER SOCKS OFF.
And then get your eyes back on your own paper and keep moving ahead.

Set your gaze on the race YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO RUN.
YOUR race.
This journey is about you and God. And it can’t be influenced or determined by how fast or how slow the people around you are running.

4- Don’t grow weary in doing good.

Sometimes, we are RIGHT ON THE EDGE of breakthrough and we think that we’re never going to arrive, so we turn back. We’re SO CLOSE and we miss it because we give up when times get hard.
It is ALWAYS too soon to quit.

5- STEP AWAY FROM THE SCALE.
Period.
– If you must weigh, then limit it to once a week. Use the same day and time each week and realize that there are going to be fluctuations due to hormones, water retention, muscle soreness, etc.
-If you really want to monitor for fat loss vs weight loss, use measurements.
-Keep a pair of progress pants. These should be ones that are really tight or even too small. Try them on once a month and see if your shape is changing. Sometimes, we won’t see ANY loss on the scale, but measurements and/or fit of clothes can change drastically.

Bottom line: THIS IS ABOUT YOUR HEART far more than your body. This is about your obedience far more than your weight.

Stop worrying over what that number tells you and go ask the Lord what He wants you to do. Take this journey hand-in-hand with Him. Obedience > results.

You are LOVED, friend, and that has NOTHING to do with how much you weigh. PRESS ON.

As always, I’m here, praying for you and CHEERING YOU ON!

HopeFest 2016: BORN FOR A BATTLE

March 12, 2016 By Kara Leave a Comment

Hope: the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best.

Have you ever been in a situation in which you had no hope?

I HOPE not, but chances are likely that you have.

I think about 1 Thessalonians 4:13 which says, “…so you will not grieve like people who have no hope.”

I am so grateful that no matter how bad things get, I have HOPE because I have Jesus.

But the truth is that hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people do not.

They don’t know that there is an answer to every problem. They don’t know that there is a way to have the peace that surpasses all understanding. And they don’t know what joy they are missing.

An Organization called CityServe launched an initiative called HOPEFEST which began as a group of pastors and churches that sought out opportunities to be more present in their communities.

CityServe Arizona’s HopeFest event in Phoenix brings the community together to meet the immediate needs of the uninsured, under-insured and under-served neighbors, and then connects them to resources that facilitate long-term
solutions, independence and stability.

Through a collaboration of helping agencies, organizations and individuals,  thousands of people receive FREE medical, dental, vision, food, housing, haircuts, clothing, personal care products, employment services, child safety needs and so much more.

Along with those services that they are getting at this event, they are also gaining HOPE.

Revelation Wellness is a sponsor of this event and shows up each year to offer people the HOPE that is gained through Christ alone.

The first time I watched this video about HopeFest, I cried. When I watch it now, I still cry.

(If reading this in your email, click HERE to see the video).

As you’ll see when watching it, they aren’t just teaching these people a few new exercise moves- they are MOVING in LOVE. They are showing others that they are valuable, created by God, and worth loving.

And it’s beautiful.

For RevelationWellness to be able to show up and to serve the community in this way, they need our help. If you visit this site you’ll find more information about this event and how you can help.

Bottom line: they need our support. For a donation of $25.00 or more you will be helping to GIVE HOPE to those who desperately need it. You’ll be helping them to be the hands and feet of Christ in a real, tangible way. Annnnddd, you get a cute shirt in exchange. What’s not to love?

And for the first time ever, I am getting the amazing privilege of flying to Phoenix to help with HopeFest. I get to tangibly see the way that your gifts of support are going to CHANGE LIVES FOR THE GLORY OF GOD!!!

hopefest

Will you do me a favor and  go visit their site and read more? And if you didn’t already, GO WATCH THE VIDEO I posted above. I know you’ll see what I do when I watch it- Jesus with skin on. Once you get to about the 1:30 mark you’ll start to tear up. By another minute in my guess is you’ll be crying and by the end you may have the ‘ugly cry’ going. You’ve been warned but it is WORTH it!

This year’s theme: BORN FOR A BATTLE. See, I was born for a battle to help lead others in transparency and vulnerability to a place of FREEDOM and living in their original design. And YOU were #bornforabattle. You were created on purpose and for a specific purpose and the Lord is ready to use you even now to fight the battle you were created for.

Thank you for your hearts, friends, and for how you help build up the Body.

I am so very grateful for you and that you choose to meet me in this space.

Updates and Checking In

March 8, 2016 By Kara 2 Comments

Hey, friends!!!

How are you?!?! I hope things are going well for you. It’s finally starting to warm up around here in NC, which is WONDERFUL, but brings with it all the local seasonal allergy woes. I’m doing my best to eat good foods, drink tons of water, have a little bit of local honey each day (they say this helps?!) and to take extra good care of myself physically.

It’s been so busy around here lately! As you probably have seen on our social media sites, the FINALLY FREE book launch happened last week and so since that time I’ve been busy processing orders, packaging, and shipping the books. We sold out of all the ones that I had pre-ordered, and I’ve got two more batches being printed right now that I hope to be able to ship out soon. It’s been SO fun to see your orders come through! Thank you for blessing me with your support!

We also had another milestone last week- our 5 year old had his first wrestling match. Holy moly…any of you other mamas have a little one who wrestles? Talk about intense! I’ve watched many matches before and never really thought about it before, but watching my little one walk out onto that big mat and knowing how nervous he was?!?! I could barely watch…
IMG_6364
Luckily, he came out on top that first match and won 16 to 6, which was just the confidence boost he needed. We have our next match tonight and he may not win again, but at least he knows that he has won once. Our goal isn’t to raise a state champion wrestler, but just a little boy who grows into being a good man. Part of that will be learning to be a good winner AND a good loser…to persevere when afraid…to work hard when things are difficult…and more.

I’ve been experimenting with some new recipes and foods and hope to be able to share these with you soon.

The At-Home TRIBE has been growing and this month we are focusing on the phrase MADE FOR MORE.
It’s been a beautiful journey of watching the Lord teach us more about what this means in each of our lives.

Finally Free Book PRE-ORDER IS OPEN!!!

March 3, 2016 By Kara Leave a Comment

You’ve heard me talking about this book for several months now. I originally started out to write an ebook and through a series of events, it somehow transitioned into a 28-day workbook study called FINALLY FREE.

book
This workbook features 28 days of faith based teaching, scripture, prayer starters, journaling topics, and healthy habit information. It’s written to try to help you find some new freedom not just in your health journeys, but also in your hearts.

I’m praying that it is a tool that the Lord can use to bring about change in our hearts so that we can more fully pursue HIM!

Overnight Oats (PROTEIN style!)

March 1, 2016 By Kara 5 Comments

A quick Pinterest search will turn up hundreds of variations on the Overnight Oats concept.

True story: I’ve never liked oatmeal. It’s a texture thing, I suppose. But, it’s just never been something I could eat.

A few months back I watched a video by my friend Courtney of Rev Well Anderson, and she was talking about how easy it was to make overnight oats. They keep her full, they’re easy to throw together, and she can grab them and take them with her on busy mornings when she needs to get out the door.

After a little experimentation, I have finally discovered the PERFECT recipe for my version of Overnight Oats and have added some protein to make sure they help keep me full, satisfied, and balance my hunger hormones.

Here’s what I do:

*Grab a jar. I use old glass peanut butter jars because we have a lot of them and they’re the perfect size. And they’re free- an added bonus!
IMG_6162

*Add to it around a half cup of oats. I use old fashioned oats, you can use any type you prefer.

*Add about one and a half times that same amount of liquid. In this example, if you added a half cup of oats, add around 3/4 c liquid of your choice. I use unsweetened vanilla almond milk.

Now add your favorite mix-ins.

1- I add a full scoop of chocolate protein powder (my favorite brand currently is ISOPURE in the chocolate flavor. I buy it at Vitamin Shoppe and no, I’m not paid anything to tell you how much I love this product). (Note: if you aren’t adding protein powder, you won’t need quite as much of your liquid as mentioned above).

2- a scoop of all natural peanut butter.

3- 2 TB or so of unsweetened cocoa powder (I just shake it in- some days more, some days less. I love a dark, chocolatey taste, so I load up on this.) It’s also a craving crusher- did you know that??? Be sure you’re adding UNSWEETENED cocoa.
IMG_6163
4- a small squirt of local honey. This time of year I try to get in a little local honey every day for allergy issues. I keep the serving size small on this. Yes it is delicious, but no, it’s not super fat loss friendly.

5- liquid stevia to taste. I usually use about 4 drops or so.

6- Cinnamon.

7- Some days I add flaxseed or coconut oil.
GET CREATIVE HERE! Whatever you like, go for it. My husband prefers berries in his and uses vanilla protein powder. Use whatever you like best.

Now, put the lid on and shake, shake, shake!

Set in the fridge.

The next morning, take it out, shake it up, and then either heat and eat or you can enjoy it cold just right out of the jar. I usually heat mine up, put the lid back on, and take it with me as I run errands, drop the kids off at school, or even to eat as I’m waiting on my next class to begin.

If you find that yours is too dry, pour in a little of your morning coffee.
SO DELICIOUS!!!

Meal prep doesn’t have to be complicated. You can prepare several of these at the beginning of the week and then just heat and eat when needed. Experiment with quantities and ratios of liquid and oats. Depending on your toppings, and on how long it sits in the fridge, you may have to adjust.

Hope you enjoy this as much as I have!!!IMG_5856
