Shirts on Sale til Sunday!

September 11, 2015 By Kara Leave a Comment

Hello, friends!

Sorry for my long absence! I’m in the middle of trying to transition this blog over to a new server and the new format is taking some adjustments.

I’ve also been busy working on a new At-Home Workout program that I hope to launch in less than two weeks. It is going to be so fun!

For today, I wanted to let you know about a quick shirt sale that I’ve got going on.

I’ve got a few friends who wanted to support Wellness Witness, but who don’t really do a whole lot of exercising. They asked me to create a shirt that they could wear out around town that wasn’t specifically about working out.

I created a new TeeSpring design that is called “She is Strong” based on Proverbs 31:25.
I’ve put it in three different options- a women’s cut tshirt, a flowy tank, and a hoodie. Each option comes in two different colors.
GIVEAWAY ALERT!!! Many of you asked for a shirt option that you could wear around town and not just to a workout. Here's the newest one! It's based on Prov 31:25. I've made options available for a tshirt, a tank (loose, flowy style), and a hoodie in two colors for each. It says " SHE IS STRONG" then Prov. 31:25 and Wellness Witness. This sale is only open for THREE DAYS, so if you want to order, don't delay for too long. Head over to www.teespring.com/wellnesswitness2 to order yours. And for fun, I'm going to give one away on FB and Instagram. Share this post and picture (make sure it's set to public so I can see it) with a comment on which color/style is your favorite. I'll pick a winner early Sunday morning. Thanks!! #wellnesswitnessgear #giveaway

In case you’re interested in purchasing one, head over to TEESPRING (www.teespring.com/wellnesswitness2) BEFORE SUNDAY to order yours. I will probably launch these again in the future, but the prices may be a bit higher next time. As always, thank you so much to each of you who support me through your kind words, your prayers, and your purchases of items such as these. I love you!

Dear Teacher,

August 18, 2015 By Kara Leave a Comment

Dear Teachers-

The summer is wrapping up and many of you are returning to work. I guess I should say “officially” returning to work because I know that many of you have spent your summer break working hard to get ready for your new students, almost as soon as you wrapped up the school year in June.

I wanted to write you and to say Thank you. Thanks for showing up to work in a profession that many are walking away from.

Thanks for investing your time, your talents, your energy, and your heart into students that may or may not ever give you the appreciation that you deserve.

Thanks for sitting through professional development workshops to learn new techniques to help you better meet the needs of a ridiculously vast number of student needs and issues.

Thanks for spending your lunch break helping your students open their milk cartons, tutoring a student who is struggling, or trying to find out why one of the little girls in your room is sitting all by herself.

Thanks for showing up early to meet with concerned parents and for staying late to help those students that don’t have anyone else at home to do so.

Thanks for making sure that my kids have a snack on the days that I forgot to pack one. Thanks for reassuring scared parents on the first day of school as they stand with tears in their eyes trying to not cry while handing over their most precious possessions in the world- their children. Thanks for showing up on days that you feel like quitting.

Thanks for taking care of my children when they don’t feel well, when they’re having a bad day, or when they may just be acting plain mean.

Thank you for teaching my children things that I’m not able to- for being patient when you want to not be, and for being encouraging when you’re sitting and listening to them sound out words at the pace of a snail. Thanks to those that serve as club advisers, athletic team coaches, or show up to watch ballgames and performances that your students are a part of. You are such a huge influence on their lives! You make a difference and you let them know that THEY MATTER when you show up. Thank you.

Thanks for doing car duty in the morning, lunch duty when you’d rather be eating or catching up on all the paperwork you need to do, and bus duty in the afternoons. Your supervision helps me to not worry and to know that my child is safe.

Thanks for putting up with angry phone calls from parents that question you before they know the whole situation. For the times that you’ve been harshly judged or mistreated or simply treated without the respect that you deserve, I’m sorry.

Thanks for showing up to teach my children when you’d probably rather be at home with your own.

Thanks for not giving up. Thanks for showing up.

You matter.

YOU MATTER.

The influence you have over the students in your classroom Is huge. You get to build them up, even when they maybe have never heard affirming, kind words before. You have the opportunity to affirm the person that they were made to be, the skills that they have inside of them, and the potential they have to change the world. WHAT A GIFT!You have the responsibility of not just imparting knowledge, but also life skills.

You get the task of meeting not just their educational needs, but also their emotional and sometimes physical needs.

It’s a big job, friend.

Know this: I’ll be praying for you.

I believe in you and the work that you are doing.

I KNOW that you are one of the absolute biggest factors in whether or not my children will love school or hate it.

You have the ability to make your classroom a safe space for learning, fun, and community. I pray that you do.

When there is a student in your classroom that is feeling sad or lonely, I pray that you have eyes quick to notice and the words that will be quick to heal.

When you pass  a student in the hallway, I pray that you offer a smile and a word of encouragement.

When you are sitting in yet another faculty meeting, I’m praying that you’ll be able to keep the point of all of this right in front of you- to love and teach and reach these students regardless of the barriers you face.

Those barriers often seem overwhelming. I pray for endurance for you to keep trying.

I pray for wisdom for you to figure out difficult situations with challenging students (and adults).

I pray for you to find JOY in your calling- and that you can have eyes that can see the infinite potential you have each day to literally change lives. Not just lives, but generations to come. With the skills and knowledge you are giving students, you’re not just helping them, but also their future children
and grandchildren.

YOU matter, teacher.

We are so very grateful for you.

We’re sending you the best we’ve got- and praying that you’ll give us the same in return.

We are for you.

Even when it may not feel like it.

We’re for you and we’re behind you. And we are CHEERING YOU ON!

Dear Mama sending your child off to school:

August 13, 2015 By Kara 2 Comments

Dear Mama sending your babies off to school:

It hurts. For many of us, It. Just. Hurts.

As my oldest starts 2nd grade and my youngest begins Kindergarten,
for the first time ever, I will not have anyone in daycare, or at home needing
me every other minute to tie a shoe or to fix a snack or to come play
superheroes.  For so long I’ve looked
forward to this stage and yet now that it’s here, I feel lost. And sad.

We do our best, don’t we? We try to make the most of the minutes that we have,
and know full well that sometimes we just blow it. All of our grand plans
sometimes fall apart and we just survive the moment. We try to love our little
people well, to build them up, to make them brave enough to face new
situations, strong enough to stand up to people when they need to, and to
submit to authority when appropriate. We pray for them, feed them, dress them,
nurture them, and love them- with everything we’ve got.

They push us to the point of absolute, complete exhaustion and moments when we
think we definitely cannot endure, and then they have a way of looking at us with
their little head tilted and their little hands folded that can take away our
breath at the very real realization of how much we love them.

I can remember the first day that I dropped off my daughter at daycare,
standing in the hallway, sobbing and feeling like “I need a break from this
child but I literally cannot bear the thought of leaving her”. Maybe that’s the
whole synopsis of motherhood right there- knowing that you are pushed to your
absolute limits and the end of yourself, yet still knowing that no matter how
tired you may be, YOU ARE IN THIS THING TOGETHER.  TOGETHER. No matter what.

Then, when she started Kindergarten, I grieved. I sat in the
rocking chair that I had nursed her in when she was an infant and looked at
pictures of her and just grieved the loss of those first magical five years.

The ending of a season.  As with anything
else in life, some seasons pass quickly and some slowly.  Some seasons are full of fun and joy, and
others just aren’t.

Beginnings of new seasons are often scary. And this one? Kindergarten? The
scariest one yet.

Before I knew it, the little baby that I dropped off at daycare grew up, and it
was time for her to start school. And just like that, my little girl walked
right into her classroom and started a new season. A beautiful season. Truly.  She has grown so much during the past two
years and school has been a tremendous blessing in our lives.

I now face this same transition with our son- but he is a bit more hesitant. He
has declared that he will NOT be going to Kindergarten and that nothing we can
say or do will change his mind. He wakes up some mornings and looks at me in a
panic asking “is today the day that I have to go?”

And I find myself in that same place of panic…wanting to shield him from ever
having to face anything scary or uncomfortable. Probably feeling the same
emotions that I’m sure many of you do- knowing that this new season is one that
he is ready for, yet scared to death to watch him walk through it.

Parenting is hard. It hurts. Literally hurts at times. And my flawed human
nature wants to protect at all costs- to try to play the role in my kid’s lives
that was only meant to be filled by God.

If it were up to me, they would never experience any pain, never deal with
someone picking on them or not liking them, never struggle with learning slower
than those around them, never have a day where they are left crying on the
playground or have to sit alone at lunch, and never a day where they are embarrassed
in front of their peers.

But friends, life is not that way. I so wish it were.

Even in the hard, God is building up in them strength of character. But more
importantly, these situations have the potential to help them realize their
need for a Savior. If they never had to face anything difficult or painful,
they would have no need for rescue- no need for Jesus.

As hard as this is to believe and to admit- as much as we love them, God loves
them more. And even more than that- they aren’t really ours.  They are on loan to us for a while and we get
to help raise them, (what a gift!) but they are the Lord’s.

I cannot protect them from everything in life. I can’t keep my son from crying
on that first day of school, or from potentially struggling through the first
weeks as he adjusts to a new routine. I can’t make sure that my daughter’s
classmates will be kind to her, or that she will have someone to sit with at
lunch. I can’t even control the teachers that are assigned to them and whether
or not they will nurture and love the little people that they were created to
be.

And that scares the mess out of me.

Maybe it does you, too?

So here’s what we have to do- submit it to Jesus.

Do we trust Him? DO WE TRUST HIM? Do I truly believe that He loves my children
and that He is looking out for them, even when I can’t? Do I believe His word
that ALL things work together for our good and for His glory for those that
love Him? Am I willing to trust Him with my most precious possessions- my
children?

Weary Mama- it may be one of the hardest prayers you ever have to say, but
offer it up to Him if you mean it.

Say, “God, I trust You. I trust you with my life and I trust you with the lives
of my most precious treasures- my children. I CHOOSE to trust. I may need to
choose it again minute by minute and hour by hour, but I choose to trust.  I believe You are good and I believe that You are
working all things together for our good. Help me to rest in that. When I am
fearful, remind me of Your promises.”

And then, give it to God, sister.

Hit your knees and pray over your children every chance you get.

And as you walk your babies into that building, know that you’re not alone. We
are in this thing together! We are Mamas who are ready and determined to raise
kids that know WHO they are, that know WHOSE they are, and that are ready to raise
up world changers. It’s not a job to be taken lightly, but one that you were made
for.

New school year- new opportunities to grow closer to Jesus and to know Him
better.

The point of it all? To point to Him.

You’ve got this, Mama. I’m praying for you and cheering you on! And if you need
a good cry, that’s okay, too.

And lastly-  Here’s a tip I learned from
a friend- wear your sunglasses into the school for the first few days. Trust me.

Discipline…

August 11, 2015 By Kara 2 Comments

Yesterday I posted this picture on my Facebook and Instagram pages.

One of the comments was: “Kara, what’s your secret for getting up early?”

The short answer: Discipline.

The long (true) answer: I don’t like getting up early. Really. I would go as far as to say that I hate it. But I know that I’ve made a commitment to some ladies that I really love and that they are counting on my to show up. I also know that the benefits (more energy, a heart centered on God, increased strength and health) far outweigh the cost (lost sleep).

And then today, I was eating this for lunch:

And someone said, “How do you make yourself eat that instead of fast food?”

The short answer: Discipline

The Long (true) answer: I don’t always like to eat salads. Some days, like today, I didn’t want to. And some days I don’t and choose to eat other things instead (including fast food). But I know that there are people counting on me (my kids, my family, many of you), and I don’t want to let you down. More than that, God’s revealed to me that I need to take care of myself and my health…even on days that I don’t want to, and I don’t want to let HIM down. Also, I know that the benefits (more energy, better health, increased strength, etc.) outweigh the cost (wanting to eat ice cream for supper).

Discipline.

It’s not a new, exciting concept. It’s not a 21 day quick fix plan. It’s not a magic pill or a shake that you can drink each morning for instant results.

But it matters.

And it works.

And each time that I choose to exercise discipline when I need to, it gets easier. Good choices lead to other good choices.

Aannndddd they allow me to make other (Fun!) choices from time to time without guilt or shame.

Just in case you forgot: eating a salad and getting up early to exercise don’t make me ‘GOOD’ just like eating junk food and sleeping all day can’t make me ‘BAD’. God’s already said I’m good and so I don’t have to strive for perfection. NEITHER DO YOU.

Today, instead of looking for the next quick fix, ask God this question: “How can I honor You with my health today?”

He may tell you to drink a glass of water, or to go to bed earlier, or to take a walk after supper. Or maybe He just tells you to back to the whole point of this journey- TO POINT TO HIM.

Friend, you’re off the hook…He will do the work. Our job, to let Him and to exercise DISCIPLINE when it’s needed.

Praying for you and cheering you on!
